MAIN VOICE-OVER:

Most of Hong Kong's facilities and services are paid for out of Government revenue.

More than half of this comes from taxes on salaries, profits and property and from stamp duty, estate duty, betting duty, hotel accommodation tax and an annual registration fee for most businesses.

Tax rates in Hong Kong are virtually the lowest in the world - personal and family allowances are almost the highest.

Our main task at the Inland Revenue Department is to collect taxes efficiently and cost effectively and to make sure that taxpayers comply fully with the law.

Keeping proper records is one requirement, noting chargeability is another, but for most taxpayers compliance simply means:

                * 1. Correctly filling up tax and other returns

                * 2. Submitting returns on time

                * 3. Paying tax due on or before the due date.

Correctly filling up tax and other returns

We have kept Inland Revenue forms simple, but before you pick up your pen, do read the explanatory notes.

Fill in all the details required, check each one carefully and double-check that you have signed your name and put the date.

Supplying incorrect or incomplete information without reasonable excuse can lead to a fine.

Evasion of tax may lead to imprisonment.

Submitting forms on time

All returns must be submitted on time. Make a note of the return lodgement date, and don't leave things to the last minute.

Paying tax due on or before the due date on the demand note.

The demand note tells you how much tax you must pay - and when.

You can pay at a bank ATM machine, by post, in person or by phone

Each payment has a due date. Note it and remember to pay on time, because there's an immediate 5% surcharge for overdue amounts and an additional 10% for further delay.

You can purchase interest bearing Tax Reserve Certificates to help you meet your tax liabilities. We have information pamphlets to help you work out in advance what your liabilities are likely to be or you can ask an enquiry officer.

Our home page provides very full information and assistance, too. You can download many Inland Revenue forms and also calculate your liability, if any, to salaries tax.

Our staff are trained to answer your questions and to give prompt and courteous service, and we have set performance targets to help us do this. If you have any complaints about the way you are treated or the way your tax affairs are dealt with we will handle them promptly.

We thank you for your co-operation in making Hong Kong an even better place to live and work.
