Appointment of Commissioner of Inland Revenue (with photos)

The Government announced today (November 27) the appointment of Mr Chu Yam-yuen, Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue, to succeed Mrs Lau Mak Yee-ming, Alice as Commissioner of Inland Revenue with effect from December 6. Mrs Lau will proceed on pre-retirement leave the same day after more than 38 years of service with the Government.

Commenting on Mr Chu's appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue said, "Mr Chu has extensive professional knowledge and experience in tax administration as well as proven administrative and leadership skills. I am confident that he will be able to lead the Inland Revenue Department to meet the challenges ahead and continue to deliver quality service to the community."

On the retirement of Mrs Lau, Miss Yue said, "Mrs Lau has served with zeal and commitment in the civil service throughout the years. As the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Mrs Lau has devoted sustained efforts in enhancing the professional service of the department. Her leadership in promoting electronic tax services to enhance effective tax administration is commendable. We sincerely wish her a happy retirement."

Brief biographical notes on the two officers are set out below:

Mrs Alice Lau Mak Yee-ming

Aged 59, Mrs Lau joined the Government as an Executive Officer II in August 1971. She was appointed as an Assistant Assessor in November 1971. She was promoted to Chief Assessor in January 1989, to Assistant Commissioner of Inland Revenue in September 1995 and to Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue in February 2001. She was promoted to Commissioner of Inland Revenue in August 2002.

Mr Chu Yam-yuen

Aged 56, Mr Chu joined the Government as an Assistant Assessor in July 1975. He was promoted to Chief Assessor in June 1994 and to Assistant Commissioner of Inland Revenue in November 2001. In September 2006, he was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue.
