PRESS RELEASE

TeleTax to be launched in April

**********************************

Taxpayers are invited to register for TeleTax at the exhibition booth of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) which will be open until Sunday (February 1 to 3) and on Tuesday (February 5) at the Hong Kong Central Library Exhibition Gallery.

IRD will introduce the TeleTax service in April 2002. TeleTax provides a 24-hour automated service for individual taxpayers to have secure access to selective personal tax information via the telephone or the Electronic Service Delivery (ESD) platform.

An IRD spokesman said that with the use of the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and his password, an individual taxpayer will be able to check whether there is any tax return not yet filed by him, whether IRD has issued to him any tax assessment, details of tax paid or payable by him and his tax reserve certificate account balance.

He can also request a duplicate of the tax return not yet filed or notice of assessment, a payment confirmation or a tax reserve certificate account balance," the spokesman said.

To use the TeleTax service, a taxpayer will have to register as a user first. Registration forms have been sent together with assessment notices issued to taxpayers since August 2001. Taxpayers can also obtain the form through downloading from the IRD web site (https://www.info.gov.hk/ird) or Fax-a-Form service at 2598 6001.

Taxpayers are invited to register immediately if they have not yet done so, since TeleTax will provide them with a direct, easy and fast service that should not be missed. It will offer them an alternative of making enquiries at a time and place convenient to them without the need for the service of enquiry staff.

"To register, simply complete the TeleTax registration form and send it to IRD by post or in person. For authentication purpose, a taxpayer should sign the registration form in the same way as he signed his last tax return. Thus IRD will not accept any registration form which is returned by fax," the spokesman added.

IRD will also demonstrate the TeleTax service on G/F of Revenue Tower, Wan Chai during office hours from 18th to 23 rd this month. Taxpayers can complete and submit the registration form on the spot.
